Learning with awareness…

The most common feature of people who achieve indescribable and superb performance is the hours of daily practise they all undertake throughout their lives.  Hours of repetitive practice is hard work; hours of practicing awareness in movement or action remain the most absorbing and interesting time in our lives.  The feeling of being alive relates to the awareness of growing to be oneself.

Moving with “conscious attention” vital for personal development

Without conscious attention to what one is feeling during an action and without applying this attention directly to the entire movement resulting from these actions, no development will occur – simple mechanical repetition will never make this come about…

If there is to be a progressive development of one’s self-image, it is necessary to focus on completing the image in all of its dimensions – not simply in those dimensions with which one is most familiar.”

The importance of respecting your own pain

From Learn to Learn:
”You can only lose by ignoring pain. Never overcome pain. if for some reason you feel pain. Do the movement just short of reaching the extent that causes pain. Gently repeating the movement just short of pain will enable you after a few minutes to extend the range of your ability more than you would accomplish by overcoming pain. When acting in spite of pain, the tissues or joints causing pain are irritated, and the inflammatory healing processors will stop you from doing that lesson next day. You can only lose by ignoring pain.”

“…I was watching a clip someone put up of Moshe Feldenkrais teaching and the woman he was working with had obviously said she didn’t know something, and in Moshe’s inimitable way he summed it up:

“People who don’t know that they don’t know, they are the silly arses. People who know that they don’t know are already of a higher quality.” Love it.”
